Signed Daido Moriyama photograph: Tokyo 1990: Daido Moriyama Water Flower Shibuya-ku, Tokyo: “When I stepped out onto the veranda that connected to the adjoining bedroom, in front of me was a forest of buildings as far as I could see. Right underneath, a subway train of the Ginza Line was rumbling out from the tunnel, only to disappear again into the belly of the Tokyo Building. In the foreground on the right-hand side, the dome of the planetarium on the rooftop of the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, which no longer exists, was glittering silver. It was a time when I was spending most of my days with a hangover from the previous night’s drinking spree with my friends. Such were the circumstances that this photograph was produced in.”—Daido Moriyama Archival inkjet print. Inspired by the likes of Eugène Atget, Weegee, and William Klein, photographer Daido Moriyama has made the city his muse. In Tokyo and other cosmopolitan locales, he documents cultural change and urban chaos in an expressive style all his own. Moriyama was a founder of Japan’s Provoke movement; from 1969 to 1970, the group published an avant-garde magazine that artfully documented the dramatic transformation of 1960s post-war Japan. Moriyama has focused on elements of modernization, the dissolution of traditional Japanese values, and the American military occupation of the country. Typically, the photographer makes grainy, black-and-white, high-contrast images, which he prints himself. He has largely shot with a small handheld automatic camera, rarely with attention to the viewfinder. Moriyama’s work has been acquired for the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Centre Pompidou, among other institutions. About Leni Sinclair: A recognized leader of the 1960s-70s counter cultural movement in Detroit and a trusted documenter of the rock n’ roll scene of that same era, Leni Sinclair is known for her vivid photographs which captured faithfully the raw drama that unfolded before her lens. But she may be best known for capturing the raucous rock n’ roll scene of that era, including photographs of such rock legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, and jazz icons such as Miles Davis and Sun Ra. Focusing her lens on musicians and fellow activists from nightclubs to festivals to street demonstrations, Sinclair captured a pivotal era in American history when art and politics intertwined. Some of her photos – including shots of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and of Nigeria’s rebel music star Fela Kuti – are among the most widely known of their subjects. What seems, at first glance, to be candid scenes featuring musicians, activists, party goers and demonstrators, read together as a more powerful story: that of an American society where art and politics were inextricably intertwined.
